The NB ACSW was created by the provincial government legislation in 1977 (http://www.gnb.ca/0062/acts/acts/a-03-1.htm) as an arms-length agency for consultation and study on the matters relating to the status of New Brunswick women. The Council was created to:
- advise governments
- increase awareness of the population on issues, programs and services
- recommend legislation, policies and practices to the Government of New Brunswick
- facilitate networking among women’s groups
- gather, research and disseminate information
The NB ACSW provides a weekly e-newsletter that is packed with information on events, excerpts from studies and op-ed pieces, and is subscribed to by over 4 000 women. The Advisory Council also regularly hosts lunch and learns and workshops around the province. For the past few years, the Advisory Council has also had weekly columns in the Times and Transcript, some of which have garnered international attention. The Council also regularly fields phone calls from women seeking services and connects them with the appropriate organizations.
The Council is a small one: it operates on a less than half a million dollars a year, has 3 full-time and one part-time employee, and a board of 13 members. Exceptionally responsible financial management over the years has allowed the Council to do a remarkable amount of good work with extremely limited resources.
Seven other provinces and two territories in Canada have Advisory Councils on the Status of Women, including all the other Atlantic provinces: Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, Manitoba, Quebec, Nunavut, and the North West Territories.
Le CCCFNB a été créé par une législation du gouvernement provincial en 1977 (http://www.gnb.ca/0062/acts/lois/a-03-1.htm) comme une agence indépendante qui servirait à la consultation et à l’étude d’affaires concernant le statut des femmes du Nouveau-Brunswick. Le Conseil a été créé pour :
· aviser les gouvernements
· augmenter la sensibilisation de la population sur les dossiers, les programmes et les services
· recommander de la législation, les politiques et les pratiques au gouvernement du Nouveau-Brunswick
· faciliter le réseautage parmi les groupes de femmes
· faire des recherches et distribuer l’information
Le CCCFNB fournit un bulletin hebdomadaire électronique appelé nouvELLES qui est rempli d’information sur des activités, extraits d’études et des commentaires éditoriaux, bulletin qui est lu par au-delà de 4000 femmes. Le Conseil consultatif organise régulièrement des dîners-causeries et des ateliers à la grandeur de la province. Depuis quelques années, le Conseil consultatif a aussi une chronique hebdomadaire dans le Times and Transcript. Certaines chroniques ont même attiré une attention internationale. Le Conseil consultatif reçoit régulièrement des appels téléphoniques de femmes cherchant des services. L’agence est capable de les diriger vers l’organisme approprié selon leurs besoins.
Le Conseil est petit : il opère avec moins d’un demi-million de dollars annuellement, a trois emplois à temps plein et un emploi à temps partiel et un conseil d’administration de treize membres. Une gestion financière responsable et exceptionnelle au cours des années a fait en sorte que le Conseil fait du travail remarquable avec des ressources très limitées.
Sept autres provinces et deux territoires du Canada ont des Conseils consultatifs sur la condition de la femme incluant toutes les autres provinces atlantiques: Île du Prince Édouard, Nouvelle-Écosse, Terre-Neuve, Manitoba, Québec, Nunavut, et les Territoires du Nord-Ouest.
